The region of Campania boasts an absolute treasure trove of history dating back to at least the eigth century B.C. when a group of Italic people known as the Oscans occupied the region and most likely established Pompeii. As a region it grew into a key trading area developed first by the Greeks and then by Rome in about 290 B.C. Campania adapted to the Romans as easily as it had to the Greeks and because of the area’s natural resources, trade flourished and the standard of living continued to rise.
The region became the playground of the rich and famous of Rome and the most powerful people in the world. Watching over all of this activity for centuries was Mt. Vesuvius which had remained dormant for as long as people could remember. The first warning of a sleeping giant came on February 5 A.D. 62 in the form of a series of earthquakes. For the next seventeen years the people of Pompeii concentrated on repairing this damage, confident that this would not happen again. This confidence came to an end on the morning of 24 August 79A.D. when the volcano released the wrath of centuries. Those who could not or would not flee the city were eventually buried under a layer of lava over 30 feet thick.
Excavations and research continue today continually revealing perfectly preserved layers of history.
